FAQS – Frequently Asked Questions

Paralympic Games are the equivalent of Olympic Games for athletes with visual impairment or physical disabilities. They are scheduled to take place 10 days after the Olympic Games at the same venues and last for approximately 12 days.

The International Paralympic Committee was founded in 1998 to better organise and coordinate the Paralympic Games. Its headquarters is located in Bonn, Germany.

All National Paralympic Committees/NPCS are represented in the International Paralympic Committee/IPC and thus speaking with one strong voice to the International Olympic Comité/IOC.

The Austrian Paralympic Committee was founded in 1998 with the objective to enable qualified athletes to compete at the Paralympics. The main task is to create the financial base for participation and to offer the best possible care for the athletes.

Widespread public interest in and admiration of the regularly outstanding performances of top athletes, the financial support of our sponsors and the substantial engagement of all persons involved in the organisation make it possible for top athletes with disabilities to continue taking up the challenges of Paralympic Games.

Athletes with an intellectual disability or multiple disabilities participate at the World Games of Special Olympics. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California, is a famous supporter of these Games.

To date, the Austrian Paralympic athletes have won a total of 208 Gold, 225 Silver and 223 Bronze medals!
