LONDON 2012 celebrates 2 years to go
On August 29, 2012 the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games will be held. Last Sunday marked exactly two years to go – a good reason for London 2012 to celebrate this milestone.
To celebrate ‘two years to go’, Chris Holmes, LOCOG’s Director for Paralympic Integration and mascot Mandeville visited athletes at the ParalympicsGB training camp in Bath, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, was joined by gold medal winning Paralympic athletes in Trafalgar Square, which was turned into a Boccia court for a showcase of Paralympic sport.
LOCOG Chair Sebastian Coe expressed his joy about having reached this milestone in preparing the 2012 Paralympics together with his team and is very much looking forward to a ‘truly memorable festival of elite sport’. He used the chance to call on the UK public to start planning their Games – as a visitor or volunteer, participating at the education or culture programmes or cheering on the Paralympic Torch relay.
Sir Phil Craven, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), emphasised on LOCOG’s extraordinary enthusiasm for the Paralympics and the exceptional co-operation between LOCOG and the IPC, which will even grow in the upcoming two years.
He highly recommended to ‘safe the date’ and put the 12 days from August 29 to September 9, 2012 in the calendar, so that no one will miss out the Paralypmic Games in London 2012.
